Booking a first psychiatric appointment can feel like a big step. Knowing what happens in the room — or on the video call — makes it a lot easier. Here's what a first visit at Empowerment Health looks like.
How long is it?
Your first visit (a psychiatric evaluation) is about 60 minutes. That time is for listening. You won't be rushed through a checklist, and you're welcome to ask questions at any point.
What we'll talk about
- What brings you in — what you've been feeling or noticing, when it started, and how it affects work, school, sleep, and relationships.
- Your history — past treatment, medications you've tried and how they worked, and any hospital stays.
- Your health — medical conditions, current medications and supplements, sleep, and substance use. Physical health often affects mood and focus, so this matters.
- Family history — some conditions run in families, which can help guide treatment.
- Your goals — what you want to feel or do differently. Your goals shape the plan.
Some questions are personal. You can always say you'd rather not answer yet. Everything you share is kept confidential under HIPAA.
What to have ready
- Photo ID and your insurance card
- A list of current medications and doses (a photo of the bottles works)
- Your preferred pharmacy
- For a child or teen: a parent or guardian, plus any school reports or past evaluations
- For telehealth: a private, quiet spot and a phone or computer with a camera
What happens at the end
Before the visit ends, we'll talk through what we think is going on and agree on a plan together. That might include medication, therapy, lab work, lifestyle changes, or a referral — often a combination. If a prescription makes sense, it's sent straight to your pharmacy. You'll also set up a follow-up visit, usually in a few weeks, to see how things are going.
