Is Telehealth Psychiatry Right for You? A Florida Guide

How online psychiatric visits work in Florida, who they're a good fit for, and how to get the most out of a video appointment.

Telehealth lets you see a psychiatric clinician by secure video from home, work, or your car (parked, please). For many people it's the difference between getting care and putting it off. Here's how it works.

How it works

You book a visit, get a secure link, and join from a phone, tablet, or computer at your appointment time. The visit covers the same things an office visit does: how you're feeling, how treatment is going, and next steps. Prescriptions, when appropriate, are sent electronically to your pharmacy.

At Empowerment Health you can be seen by telehealth anywhere in Florida. You need to be physically located in Florida at the time of the visit.

Who telehealth is a good fit for

  • Busy parents, students, and shift workers
  • People without easy transportation
  • Anyone who feels more relaxed talking from home
  • Patients continuing medication management who are doing well

When in-person may be better

Some people prefer to meet face to face, especially for a first visit or when a parent and child are both participating. You can always choose our Kissimmee office instead, or mix the two.

Telehealth is not for emergencies. If you're in crisis, call or text 988 or call 911.

Tips for a great video visit

  • Find a private spot where you can talk openly. Headphones help.
  • Test your camera and internet a few minutes early.
  • Have your medication list and pharmacy information nearby.
  • Write down questions beforehand so you don't forget them.

Does insurance cover telehealth?

Many plans cover telehealth mental health visits, including plans we accept such as Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Florida Blue, Oscar, Medicare, and Florida Medicaid. Benefits vary by plan, so we verify your coverage before your first visit.
